What I did this afternoon! Vodafone Liveguy

As many of you know I lead a busy life being a director at a few Internet companies, my typical day will start after dropping off my son at school I go in to the office, solving problems, reading blogs, coming up with ideas and working away on various projects with the odd meeting thrown in for good measure.

Getting closer to lunch time when I get an MSN message from Fraser “why are you not out finding the liveguy?” what on earth is he on about, so I ask and sends me a link to his blog post on the Vodafone Liveguy. The day before he was in Edinburgh and Fraser decided he would go look for him after it was clear that very few others had taken the leap from desktop to out and about. So what did I do, went off for lunch and decided I too would track him down, and I did. With Frasers help back at his Affiliate Command Centre he guided me like a Cruise Missile straight to the building the Liveguy had ducked in to, however when he came out of the building I was just up a bit outside Scottish Screen’s Glasgow HQ and missed him by like 10 seconds as someone else who decide to take the afternoon off work got in with the magic phrase.

So we have one Affiliate Marketing winner in Edinburgh, I have let the side down for Glasgow but Newcastle is next, will Kieron strike another blow for people who work but when something interesting Internet wise comes along go running from the office with any excuse just to take part even when they don’t actually want the prize, they just want to win!

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is something that I was taught about in School however the BB and the Cub Scouts really sent the message home, I remember going on parades with the BB on Remembrance Sunday.

Remembrance Day however doesn’t normally fall on a Sunday and the actual day set aside is the 11th of November so we remember the sacrifices by people during wars. This post was written before 11am today and queued on the server to publish on 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and you will find that most business, shops, train stations etc will observe a 2 minutes of silence.

It’s worth remembering that even if you don’t agree with war, the people that go to fight in our name do so to protect our country and only because the politicians we elected tell them to do so, if you don’t like a war do something about the people in power but always support our troops. Pay your respects to the people who have died in our name and let’s not forget that during current wars the men and woman in our armed forces that fight for us.

The World Changed Overnight

Woke up this morning to find the world had changed, the excitement and buzz surrounding the change was indeed something, some would say an historic moment and indeed World of Warcraft patch 3.0.3 had been released overnight was indeed something pretty major. The final patch before the release of Wrath of the Lich King next Thursday at 00:01 in the morning, I have my copy ordered from Gameplay however I will probably have to visit the stores on Thursday to get the additional 2 copies I will need.

I will be updating my ever popular WoW Leveing site some time after I have played Lich King as I want to make sure I still offer the fastest routes and best information to level in World of Warcraft.

Teaching the Teachers

It’s not often you can teach a teacher a new trick or two but that’s what happened his week. Managed to get myself roped in to helping my son’s primary school get its website live. They us a council funded content managment system to manage the site, all the local schools use it from what I can work out and while it’s better than many I have seen. It is a bit over complex for what should be a pretty straight forward system. Nothing I couldn’t work out, in fact I never even bothered looking at the manual.

Anyway I am pleased to say that the Hillington Primary School website is now live. I didn’t do all the pages just a few and got the images uploaded. Also took the photograph of the school but I need to go back and do again as it was 6pm when I took that shot so the shutter is down and I faked the sky, it’s actually from one of my Portugal photographs ;-)

Late Payment of Commercial Debts

With so many business going under you can’t beat about the bush when getting paid invoices. The Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 allows you to act the very day after an invoice has been paid late, you can claim a recovery free along with interest for each day the payment is late. I have wrote a huge big article on what Scottish Companies can do to recover money but the legislation is the same in England and Wales so it’s well worth a read.

Some companies act like it’s a privilege for them to pay an invoice on time, while mistakes can happen, being a constant offender of not paying invoice on time should not be tolerated and you have to use the law to send the message home to these dodgers of payments that your not going to be walked over, they will soon listen up and start paying on time.

Fusion Charts - Makes Graphs Look Good

I just did a blog post over at one of my company websites Paid On Results affiliate marketing company. About the new charts and graphs we are installing this weekend on the Affiliate and Merchants control areas.

Lots of people have asked me about these graphs before, as most of you see them back at the start of August on a website of another company of mine House Price Spy, free house prices website. If you check out the graphs here for various house price trends you will see they look rather good and while like to take the credit for making them it was in fact a company called Fusion Charts, what is most shocking is the price points you can buy the software in at from as little as $69 all the way to $1,999 and believe me these prices are amazingly good especially with the flexibility on how you can use the charts. I expect to see a lot more Affiliate sites using these in future as why use boring dull crap looking charts when these stuff is such great value.

House Prices in the UK

The new and improved House Price Spy website is now live, I started this venture a couple of years ago however it was end of last year that I decided to team up with some of my friends in the Affiliate Industry to really give the site a huge boost.

Tapping in to the expertise of different experts in different online fields should really help the site to achieve its target of being the number 1 site for house prices in the UK.

Please check out the site and send me any feedback you may have, and don’t forget to spread the word and tell your friends, family and co-workers that they can use the site to view houses prices free of charge in England, Scotland and Wales.

Adam’s 1st Day at School

The Scottish schools started back from the summer holiday today and my 4 year old boy Adam has moved on from nursery school and started primary school. Loads of parents where in the playground, as the school arranged for the primary 1’s only to be in the playground from 9 to 9:15, so could take photos and so on. None of the kids seem phased by going to school at all, they all looked happy enough, was expecting one of two to be crying but nope, the all seem keen to get in. So that’s it started, next 12 years or more having to make sure they get up on time and in school for the bell.

Adam's 1st Day at School

RIP – Rick Hubbard

I found out today that Rick Hubbard a person I worked with many years ago at Adgrafix (later became Hosting.com) has passed away. Rick was a really nice guy that everyone got on with so it’s sad news indeed. When I worked on support I was based in Scotland and he was based in Hawaii so we often done the hours that east coast USA folk didn’t do. I guess it’s good to remember someone with a funny story or memorable event, for me it was when we both where over at the company HQ in Sudbury as little way outside Boston for 2 weeks. Now what I didn’t know was Rick was allergic to all kinds of perfumes, so unknown to me when I was getting ready to head in to the office one day I was busy spraying myself with CK One and Lynx so I smelt nice LOL .. I go in, and was working with Rick on some server thing that needed done, and he approached the “issue” of the perfumes and his allergy, I was like oh sorry if I had known I wouldn’t have bothered and he was like no problem but cause he suffered from them pretty bad he asked would it be ok if I took this green soap stuff and used it to remove the perfumes… Was a pretty funny request that I never been asked before… maybe not the funniest of stories but certainly memorable.

My thoughts are with Sandy his wife, she will probably never see this, however felt it was worth taking a few moments to remember a friend and work colleague, I might be half way around the world but it’s amazing how the Internet has brought people together and can also get news out quickly.

Wrath of the Lich King Beta Invitation!

I have not played World of Warcraft in a while so today when I opened my email to see I have been selected for the Wrath of the Lich King Beta to check out all the new content I was much amused, millions of player’s world wide would kill for this opportunity. Indeed only a few months back I would been super excited by this news, however as I have a Worldwide Invitational code card from the event in Paris I can activate any of my accounts any time I want, now I could multi-box the beta and I am thinking I might just do this as I would be one of the very few that could, 3 Death Knights anyone!

I have to say the new expansion from what I have seen of it looks ace so it’s with much amusement that after closing 3 of my accounts at the weekend, taking me from 6 to 3 that Blizzard send me the beta invitation email, maybe it was by chance this happened but you have to wonder, did someone read the reasons why I was closing the other accounts and got me approved for this beta, who knows.

Anyway if/when I do install it I will see about posting up some screen shots and a few videos for anyone that’s interested.
